ALEX VERNER
CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Alex Verner is a filmmaker known for creating visually driven, uncompromising documentaries.
Raised on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, his early interest in light, landscapes, and wilderness shaped his cinematic approach. He began filming wildlife in South Africa, with credits on Elephants Without Borders, Nature’s Great Events, and National Geographic’s Night of the Lion.
Returning to the UK, he shot TT3D: Closer to the Edge, a feature documentary about the Isle of Man TT races. This opened the door to commercial work for UFC, Nissan, Goodyear, and Jaguar Land Rover, and later led to creative development for Audi Sport and Imperial College London. Their A.I. vs human driver experiment resulted in a paper published in Nature.
In 2021, Alex directed Jack B. Yeats: The Man Who Painted Ireland for RTÉ, written with Colm Tóibín and narrated by Pierce Brosnan. The film won festival awards, earned a Royal Television Society nomination, and was described by the Irish Times as “hauntingly beautiful.”
His most recent documentary, Christy Brown: Self Portrait (RTÉ, 2023), featuring Saoirse Ronan and narrated by Aidan Gillen, was praised by The Irish Independent, Irish Times, and Sunday Times as one of the most significant explorations of Brown’s life to date.
Alex’s work is defined by a respect for the subject, a focus on strong imagery, and a belief that the story is best told without unnecessary embellishment.
